What is the new SLAM feature in iGuide PLANIX R1 and Pro?

SLAM stands for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping and in the iGuide PLANIX R1 and Pro it is used in combination with LiDAR data to track and show, in real-time, an Operator’s position providing guidance for scan placement. This method of using SLAM is unique to iGuide. It comes from a desire to grow the capabilities of iGuide Service Providers while maintaining speed and flexibility of capture.

What does SLAM do?

  1. Real-Time Tracking: As the Operator moves through the space, it tracks the PLANIX R1 or Pro’s movement in real-time, showing the camera’s position relative to the data they have collected.
  1. Alignment Feedback: With each scan, the Operator is provided feedback on their latest scan position and alignment relative to the other scans. A color rating system is used indicating good, acceptable, or poor alignment.

SLAM is like indoor GPS for your camera. It helps you orient yourself and can help you make decisions about where to efficiently place your next scan as you capture the space.

What is the main benefit of SLAM?

SLAM empowers the Operator with an understanding of camera placement in real-time as they capture, helping to create better iGuide 3D Tours by providing a sense of where they are relative to the data they have collected.

A colored indicator shows the likelihood of alignment to help them make decisions about where to go in a property and what to capture. When combined with automatic alignment, SLAM empowers users to create better tours by enabling better & more efficient coverage.

What is coverage, and why does it matter?

Coverage refers to the number of scans required to capture an entire property and the details captured with each scan. Generally speaking, better coverage makes for a better 3D tour. Additionally, coverage influences floor plan accuracy, as rooms that have not been scanned will not be included in the floor plan.

The number of scans affects the time required to scan a property. Knowledge of ideal camera placement is required to reduce time spent scanning but still capture the data needed for a professional, accurate output. Ideal camera placement is based on line-of-sight and distance from the previous scan. SLAM helps the Operator determine placement by showing them where the camera rests in real-time.

Does SLAM result in better data alignment?

Data alignment greatly benefits from SLAM because it helps the Operator create scans in optimal locations for automatic data alignment.

Who does SLAM benefit?

  1. New iGuide Service Providers: For those new to capture technology or frustrated by slow, confusing capture processes, SLAM offers real-time feedback to keep you on track and focused on capturing an accurate, immersive, 3D tour and floor plan.
  2. Growing Teams: iGuide Service Providers adding PLANIX R1 or Pro camera systems can use SLAM to help new team members quickly grasp the capture process with minimal training, while experienced members may find it unnecessary as their skills grow.

Conclusion

Like iGuide’s commitment to growing your business, SLAM intends to help you grow as a measurement specialist and improve your skills and capabilities as an iGuide Service Provider by learning to scan a property as efficiently as possible with the PLANIX R1 or Pro.
